Decking. Underlayment. Ice and water shield. Starter strip. Drip edge. Valleys. Ridge vents.
Individually, the terms aren't complicated. The challenge is understanding where each component goes, what it does, and why it matters to the finished roof.
This guide breaks down the most common roofing terms Ontario homeowners are likely to encounter and explains how the different components work together as a complete roofing system.
First, Understand the Basic Shape of Your Roof
Before getting into roofing materials, it helps to understand the names used to describe the roof itself.
Eave
The eave is the lower horizontal edge of a sloped roof. Water travels down the roof toward the eaves before entering the eavestrough.
Because eaves are particularly vulnerable to water backing up from snow and ice, they are also an important area for leak protection.
Rake
The rake is the sloped outer edge of a gable roof, running from the eave toward the ridge.
Starter shingles and edge protection are commonly installed along this area.
Ridge
The ridge is the horizontal peak where two roof slopes meet.
Depending on the ventilation system, a ridge may contain a ridge vent covered by specially designed ridge cap shingles.
Hip
A hip is the raised diagonal line formed where two roof slopes meet.
Like the ridge, hips are normally finished with dedicated hip-and-ridge cap shingles.
Valley
A valley is the inward-facing intersection where two roof slopes meet.
Valleys collect water from two sections of the roof at once, making proper waterproofing and installation especially important.
Roof Pitch or Slope
Pitch, or roof slope, describes how steep a roof is.
A 6:12 roof, for example, rises six inches vertically for every twelve inches it travels horizontally.
Pitch affects drainage, installation difficulty, material requirements, and which roofing systems can be used.
The Layers of an Asphalt Roofing System
A roof isn't just shingles.
A properly designed asphalt roofing system contains multiple layers, with each component performing a different job.
Roof Deck / Sheathing
The roof deck, sometimes called sheathing or decking, is the structural surface beneath the roofing materials.
Residential roof decking is commonly made from plywood or OSB.
During a roof replacement, removing the existing shingles allows the contractor to inspect the deck for deterioration, damaged sections, or areas that may need replacement before the new roofing system is installed.
Leak Barrier / Ice and Water Shield
A leak barrier, commonly called ice and water shield, is a self-adhering waterproof membrane used in vulnerable areas of the roof.
It is different from standard roof underlayment.
Leak barriers provide additional protection in areas particularly susceptible to water infiltration, including eaves, valleys, walls, and roof penetrations.
In Ontario's climate, where roofs are exposed to snow, freezing temperatures, and ice dams, this is an especially important part of the roofing system.
Roof Deck Protection / Underlayment
Underlayment is installed over the roof deck and beneath the shingles.
It creates a secondary water-shedding layer beneath the primary roof covering and helps protect the deck against moisture that gets beneath the shingles.
Modern synthetic underlayments are commonly used instead of traditional asphalt felt.
Starter Strip Shingles
Starter strips form the first course of the shingle system along roof edges.
Purpose-made starter strips contain factory-positioned adhesive designed to help seal the first course of shingles and reduce the risk of wind uplift.
They are normally installed along the eaves and rakes.
Asphalt Shingles
The shingles are the visible weather-shedding layer covering most residential sloped roofs.
Modern architectural shingles generally use a fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and protective mineral granules.
Architectural shingles are also sometimes called laminated or dimensional shingles because multiple layers create a thicker, more dimensional appearance than traditional three-tab shingles.
Hip and Ridge Cap Shingles
Hip and ridge cap shingles are specifically designed to cover the hips and ridges of the roof.
These areas should not simply be thought of as ordinary field shingles folded over the peak.
Purpose-made caps provide weather protection while creating a more finished appearance at some of the roof's most exposed intersections.
Roofing Terms Around Walls, Chimneys, and Penetrations
Some of the most important parts of a roof aren't the large open areas.
They're the places where the roofing system is interrupted.
Flashing
Flashing is metal or another waterproof material used to direct water away from joints, transitions, and penetrations.
You'll commonly see flashing around chimneys, walls, plumbing vents, skylights, and valleys.
Step Flashing
Step flashing is used where a sloped roof meets a vertical wall.
Small individual pieces of flashing overlap with successive courses of shingles, creating a layered path that directs water down the roof instead of allowing it behind the wall or roofing materials.
Pipe Flashing / Plumbing Vent Flashing
Plumbing pipes that pass through the roof require a sealed flashing assembly around the penetration.
These components are often referred to as pipe boots, plumbing vent flashings, or pipe flashings.
Valley Flashing
Roof valleys carry a significant amount of runoff because they receive water from multiple roof slopes.
Depending on the roofing system and installation method, valleys may incorporate waterproof membrane, metal valley flashing, and carefully installed shingles to move water toward the eaves without allowing it beneath the roof covering.
Drip Edge
Drip edge is metal flashing installed along the perimeter of the roof.
It helps direct water away from the roof deck and into the drainage system rather than allowing runoff to travel back underneath the roofing materials.
Ventilation Terms Every Homeowner Should Understand
Roofing and attic ventilation are closely connected.
A properly designed attic ventilation system allows outside air to enter through intake ventilation while warm, moisture-laden air exits through exhaust ventilation higher on the roof.
Soffit Ventilation
The soffit is the underside of the roof overhang.
Ventilated soffit can provide intake air at the lower portion of the attic.
Ridge Vent
A ridge vent is an exhaust vent installed along the roof ridge.
An opening is created beneath the vent so warm air and moisture can escape near the highest point of the attic.
The ridge vent is then covered with ridge cap shingles so it becomes part of the finished roofing system.
Box Vent / Roof Vent
A box vent is an individual exhaust vent installed through the roof deck.
Several vents may be installed across a roof depending on the attic design, roof configuration, and ventilation requirements.
Balanced Ventilation
Good attic ventilation isn't simply about adding more roof vents.
A ventilation system needs appropriate intake and exhaust, allowing air to move through the attic rather than concentrating ventilation on only one side of the system.
Drainage Terms: Where the Water Goes Next
The roofing system's job isn't finished when water reaches the edge of the shingles.
Proper drainage helps move that water safely away from the roof and the home.
Eavestrough / Gutter
The eavestrough, also called a gutter, collects water leaving the roof and directs it toward the downspouts.
Keeping eavestroughs clear is important because restricted drainage can cause water to overflow near roof edges, fascia, siding, and the foundation.
Downspout
The downspout carries water from the eavestrough toward ground level.
Water should ultimately be directed away from the home's foundation.
Fascia
The fascia is the vertical finished surface along the roof edge.
Eavestroughs are commonly attached along this area.
Soffit
In addition to its role in ventilation, the soffit finishes and protects the underside of the roof overhang.

Understanding the terminology on your roofing quote may be even more important.
Roofing Square
A square is a roofing measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area.
Roofers use squares when calculating shingles, underlayment, and other materials.
A 2,000-square-foot roof surface, for example, represents approximately 20 roofing squares before waste and material allowances are considered.
Tear-Off
Tear-off means removing the existing roofing materials rather than installing another roof covering over them.
Removing the existing roof allows the underlying deck to be inspected before the new roofing system is installed.
Deck Replacement
If deteriorated, soft, or damaged decking is discovered during tear-off, sections may need to be removed and replaced.
A detailed roofing proposal should explain how additional decking is handled and priced if damaged wood is discovered once the existing roof is opened.
Roof Penetration
A roof penetration is anything that passes through the roof surface.
Examples include:
- Plumbing vents
- Bathroom exhaust vents
- Skylights
- Mechanical equipment
- Certain electrical or ventilation components
Every penetration needs to be properly integrated and waterproofed.
Course
A course is one horizontal row of shingles.
Shingles are installed in overlapping courses so water is continually directed toward the bottom of the roof.
Nail Line
The nail line, or nailing area, is the manufacturer-specified portion of the shingle where fasteners should be installed.
Correct fastener placement is an important part of proper shingle installation and system performance.
Workmanship Warranty
A workmanship warranty is provided by the roofing contractor and covers qualifying issues related to the installation itself according to the terms of that contractor's warranty.
Manufacturer Warranty
A manufacturer warranty is issued by the roofing-material manufacturer.
Coverage can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer, products used, installation requirements, contractor certification, and warranty level.
Two roofs using similar-looking shingles may therefore carry very different warranty coverage.
Don't Compare Roofing Quotes by Shingle Brand Alone
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is comparing roof replacements based only on the name of the shingle.
A roof is a system.
When comparing proposals, look at what is being installed under, around, and above the shingles, including:
- Roof deck protection
- Leak barrier
- Starter shingles
- Flashing
