Which roof system is right for your southern Ontario home?

Choosing a new roof is one of the larger investments you will make in your home, and in southern Ontario the right choice depends as much on our climate as it does on your budget. Freeze-thaw cycles, ice damming, heavy spring rain, and summer heat all put a roof to work. Here is how we help homeowners across Hamilton, Burlington, and the GTA West think through the decision.

Start with the slope

The single biggest factor is the pitch of your roof, because it determines which systems are even an option.

  • Sloped (pitched) roofs can take asphalt shingles, metal, or synthetic slate and shake.
  • Flat or low-slope roofs need a membrane system rather than shingles, because water needs to be sealed out rather than shed.

If your home mixes both — a pitched main roof with a flat section over an addition or porch — you will likely need two systems that tie together cleanly at the transition. That detail is where a lot of leaks start, so it is worth getting right.

Asphalt shingles: the dependable default

For most pitched roofs, architectural asphalt shingles remain the best balance of cost, longevity, and curb appeal. We install GAF Timberline HDZ, GAF's number-one-selling shingle, in the High Definition colours available in Canada. As a GAF Master Elite contractor — a designation held by a small percentage of roofers in North America — we can offer enhanced manufacturer warranties that standard installers cannot.

Asphalt makes sense if you want:

  • A proven system with a 25-plus year service life.
  • A wide range of colours to match your home.
  • The most competitive price per square foot.

Metal and synthetic: longer life, distinct looks

If you plan to stay in your home for decades, two premium systems are worth a look:

  • Metal standing seam (Wiseline): extremely durable, sheds snow well, and carries a long lifespan. A strong fit for both modern and rural-style homes.
  • Synthetic slate and shake (EuroShield): made from recycled rubber, it delivers the look of slate or cedar with far better impact and freeze-thaw resistance than the real thing.

Both cost more upfront than asphalt, but they can be the last roof you ever buy.

Don't forget what's under and above the roof

A roof system is more than the shingles.

  • Skylights brighten interior spaces but must be flashed correctly — a poorly installed skylight is a guaranteed future leak. We install and properly integrate them into the roof system.
  • Attic insulation and ventilation quietly determine how long your roof lasts. Poor ventilation traps heat and moisture, shortens shingle life, and drives ice damming in winter. Upgrading attic insulation is often the highest-return improvement you can make alongside a re-roof.

How to decide

When we visit for a free quote, we walk through four questions with you:

  1. How long do you plan to stay? Longer horizons justify metal or synthetic.
  2. What is the roof's slope and complexity? This sets your real options.
  3. What is your budget, including ventilation and flashing? The cheapest shingle on a neglected attic is a false economy.
  4. What look do you want? Colour and profile matter for resale and for living with the result every day.

There is no single best roof — only the best roof for your home, your climate, and your timeline. If you are weighing a replacement anywhere in Hamilton, Burlington, or the surrounding GTA West, we are glad to take a look and give you an honest, written assessment with no obligation.
