Attic Insulation

ProPINK FIBERGLAS blown-in loosefill for code-compliant R-60 attics.

The Service

Why Attic Insulation matters for your home or building.

Attic insulation is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost home upgrades you can make in southern Ontario. The Ontario Building Code currently requires R-60 in attic spaces for new builds, and most older Hamilton homes are insulated to a much lower R value, sometimes as low as R-12 to R-20.

Gateway installs Owens Corning ProPINK FIBERGLAS blown-in loosefill insulation, the product specified in our brief. ProPINK fills attic cavities completely, conforms around joists, wiring, and vents, and is non-combustible and resistant to settling over time.

Every install begins with an attic assessment: existing R-value, ventilation, vapour barrier integrity, and any moisture or pest issues. We address ventilation and air-sealing as part of the scope when needed, adding insulation without proper ventilation can cause condensation problems, so we don't separate the two.

Process

What to expect, step by step.

  1. 01

    Attic assessment

Existing R-value measurement, ventilation check (soffit, ridge, gable), vapour barrier inspection, and identification of any moisture or pest concerns.

  2. 02

    Air sealing

Where required, we seal penetrations (plumbing stacks, wiring, recessed lights, attic hatch) before adding insulation. Air-sealing is what makes the new R-value actually perform.

  3. 03

    Ventilation correction

If soffit baffles are blocked or ridge vents are insufficient, we correct ventilation before insulation goes in. Otherwise the new insulation traps moisture.

  4. 04

    Loosefill install

ProPINK FIBERGLAS blown to specified depth across the entire attic floor. Depth markers are installed so the homeowner can verify the R-value visually.

  5. 05

    Cleanup & rebate paperwork

Cleanup, equipment haul-out, and any documentation needed for federal or provincial energy rebate programs you may qualify for.

Frequently Asked

Answers to the questions we get most.

Don't see your question here? Send it through the quote form, we usually respond within a business day.

  • R-value measures resistance to heat flow, higher is better. R-60 is the current Ontario Building Code minimum for attic insulation in new homes. Older homes were often built to R-20 or R-32.

  • In most cases yes, assuming the existing insulation is dry, not contaminated, and the attic ventilation is adequate. We assess these conditions before quoting.

  • Programs change. Federal (Canada Greener Homes), provincial, and utility rebates are sometimes available for insulation upgrades. We supply install documentation needed for your application but cannot guarantee approval.

  • Most single-family attics are completed in a few hours to a full day, depending on attic size and the amount of air-sealing or ventilation work needed beforehand.

  • Most homeowners notice the upper-floor temperature difference immediately. Bill impact depends on your existing R-value, heating system, and home envelope as a whole.
